Bought an Orchid

Bought an orchid several months ago, left it at Fiancè's house. He said it grew so big that he couldn't fit it anywhere. When I got here, all I could see was the stems left. He said he had to cut them. Ha ha!
It is still alive though. Guess everything is OK after all.

Know anything about orchids? Is there still hope for this guy?

  1. I've always been scared of buying orchids. They're so pretty, but I have no idea how to care for them! Good luck!

  2. They need humidity!! This is going to sound weird, but the bathroom (with a window) is the best place. :)

  3. I also use to keep mine in the bathroom and always used a spritz bottle to water him. I do not have a green thumb though... glad to see someone else did the same!

  6. haha, thats a funny story but yeah, it isn't dead, don't worry!

If you cut it down beneath the top node it will re-grow a new stem out from that point and new flowers will come. It takes a little while so just be patient. I did it with an orchid of mine and it does work :)

  14. it's still alive and healthy if it's leaves are green, which yours are! just cut it back-the stems need to be cut about an inch up from the base. keep it watered and it will grow back, but it's a long process, so try and grow to love the greenery-you'll have it that way for a while!

  15. I remember some of my moms orchids occasionally looking like yours does now, but after a few weeks blooming to become the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. I hope yours also blooms to be just as beautiful!

  16. definitely still hope for that guy! My mom is great at keeping orchids alive. One of her tricks is to put a ice cube in them rather then water. this way it is a slower disbursement of water rather then soaking them, I guess they like this.

  18. Hi!
I love orchids and my mother has quite a few. Sometimes it is not a bad idea to trim them a little, as someone already said, it will probably grow a new stem from the closest nod. Also, if it starts to look as if it is going to die, add a little coffee grounds! But don't forget to put the pebbles on top again, they help the orchid filter the water and maintain the right level of humidity =)
